To be legally married, the applicant and a Canadian citizen must be of legal age.  Citizenship cannot be obtained directly by marriage to a Canadian citizen.  A person who decides to become a Canadian citizen must go through certain steps and comply with the requirements. 

There is no separate, distinct process, especially for those who wish to marry Canadian citizens in the process of obtaining Canadian citizenship, and the applicant, like all other applicants for Canadian citizenship, must have at least 460 days of residence in the country. 

This period must be within the last five years of applying for Canadian citizenship through marriage.  In the last five years before applying for a passport, the applicant must be a permanent resident of Canada, have a short-term legal residence throughout this time, or be a protected person. 

It may also be sponsored by a Canadian spouse if the applicant is not a Canadian resident or does not have permanent residence in Canada.
